This is the third painting I made for the exhibition “exquisite landscape” that will place at the Cityscape Art Gallery, Feb 8 – March 9, 2013 in North Vancouver. This one was to be a lake painting and I had some lines that were to be part of the composition. I had some nice reference pictures of people canoeing on Lake Louise ( Alberta) and used them as a reference.
Here are the steps I took:
You can see here the lines that I have to incorporate in the composition, on the lower half of the board.
I am drawing the people and canoe with charcoal, when done I will fix it with workable fixative.
I paint with acrylic and spray alcohol on the upper part of the painting.
I am then painting a background with azure blue acrylic mixed with medium then paint the canoes with red ink, I also spray a bit of red liquid acrylic all over the painting.
I paint a layer of white acrylic diluted in medium on the upper part to be able to stamp it later.
I then stamp a few rows of tree to symbolize a forest.
I paint inside the trees with a mix of acrylic and medium.
I draw the foreground with colouring crayons, a few herbs and flowers.
I want to subdue a bit the green on the trees, so I add a layer of yellow mixed with medium.
To make the grasses more visible, I am painting around them with a layer of yellow.
Then with a light layer of green mixed with medium.
I then paint a very watery layer of acrylic, with a bit of medium and gouache.
I then paint a very watery layer of acrylic, with a bit of medium and gouache. I did scratch some areas in the grass to make it whiter. I will also draw with charcoal to accentuate shapes in the grasses and tree areas.
I splatter with liquid acrylic, acrylic mixed in water, watercolor and alcohol.
I paint with orange watercolor on top of the red canoes, and flowers in the grass area.
